Where to start
After school, you have several options. You can:
- immediately start the adult life and get to work,
- take a pause (gap year), that is, think carefully about the future during the year, get acquainted with various fields in order to know yourself well and understand what you want to do in your later life,
- go to university, other higher educational institutions or secondary vocational institutions.
All options have both advantages and disadvantages․Let’s explore them.
1. “Goodbye Education, Hello Adult life”
Pros:
- You don’t spend years learning.
- You can immediately start working full-time and earn a living.
Cons:
- Not all employers hire young people without higher education (or without work experience). At least, a certificate is required that you study at an institute/university.
- You need to clearly determine in which direction you will move forward in your career and develop in order to have a good position and the opportunity to earn money in the future.
2. Gap Year
Pros:
- If you are still in doubt about what you will do after school and what area you are interested in, this is the best option. By the way, this is what young people from many countries do.
You will have a year during which you will do whatever you want: work, participate in various courses, volunteer, travel, and so on.
- This will help you in developing as a person, orienting yourself toward the future, and helping you make more mature decisions.
- You can use this year to fill in the gaps in your knowledge or improve them in certain areas. You don’t like math or history? One year is enough to keep you in good condition.
If desired, you can enroll in a course: new skills, new acquaintances and experience are guaranteed.
Cons:
- Not everyone has enough money to take a gap year. After all, courses, seminars, travel require funds, and parents must pay for you, who still need to be convinced of the need for this gap year. Or should you try to find a job to at least provide for yourself to some extent.
- You must have the willpower not to waste this year in vain, because time goes early, and if you do not do useful work, you will not win and just lose precious time.
3. Continuing Education
Pros:
- You will gain both general and professional knowledge that will allow you to cope with various fields and prepare you for future work and later life.
- You will gain new acquaintances and friends.
- You will have a diploma of higher or professional education, which will allow you to apply for a better job and progress in your future career.
Cons:
- Difficulty of choice: which institute / university to choose, which profession, in which city.
- If you are studying a profession that you do not want, or you are sure that you will not need it in later life, and you will not work in this field, then there is a risk that you will waste the best years of your life in vain.
